Laying Microcement Correctly – Instructions & Tips

How to Properly Install Microcement – Professional Guide

Microcement is a versatile, modern floor covering characterized by its seamless appearance and durability. In this guide, we will show you how to professionally install microcement and what materials you will need.

🛠️ What You Need

  • Microcement Primer
  • Microcement Base Coat
  • Reinforcing Mesh 165 g/m² (4×4 mm)Available Here
  • Microcement Top Coat
  • Sealer
  • Trowel, Spatula, Sanding device

📝 Step-by-Step Guide

1. Substrate Preparation

The substrate must be clean, dry, load-bearing, and even. Remove all loose particles, dust, and grease. Cracks and unevenness should be leveled beforehand.

2. Apply Primer

Apply the microcement primer evenly. This ensures optimal adhesion for the subsequent layers. Allow the primer to dry completely (approx. 4-6 hours).

3. First Base Coat with Reinforcing Mesh

Important: The reinforcing mesh is crucial for crack resistance!

  • Apply the first layer of microcement base (approx. 1-2 mm thick)
  • Embed the reinforcing mesh 165 g/m² into the fresh layer
  • Press the mesh firmly into the compound with a trowel
  • Overlap the strips by approx. 5-10 cm
  • Ensure no air bubbles form

The reinforcing mesh prevents tension cracks and ensures even load distribution – especially important for heavily trafficked areas!

4. Second Base Coat

After drying (approx. 24 hours), apply a second layer of microcement base. This layer completely covers the mesh and creates an even surface.

5. Intermediate Sanding

Lightly sand the surface to remove any imperfections. Thoroughly remove the sanding dust.

6. Apply Top Coat

Apply 1-2 thin layers of microcement top coat. This determines the final appearance and texture. Allow each layer to dry completely.

7. Sealing

Finally, apply 2-3 layers of sealer. This protects the surface from moisture, stains, and abrasion.

⚠️ Important Tips

  • Temperature: Work at a room temperature of 15-25°C
  • Drying Time: Adhere to the specified drying times
  • Don't forget the reinforcing mesh: Without mesh, cracks can occur!
  • Thin Layers: Several thin layers are better than one thick one
  • Even Application: Work quickly and evenly

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is reinforcing mesh necessary?

The reinforcing mesh prevents tensions and movements in the substrate from causing cracks in the microcement surface. It is particularly important for heavily trafficked areas and large surfaces.

How long does microcement need to dry?

The primer needs 4-6 hours, each base coat approximately 24 hours. Complete curing takes about 7 days. Only after this time is the surface fully load-bearing.

Can I install microcement myself?

With craftsmanship and the right instructions, it is possible. For large areas or special requirements, however, we recommend a specialist company.
